Tip for Zip Drive Owners If you use one those great Iomega , it is important to check the drive's health, on a regular basis. No, they do not break often at all!
So, why check?... An insignificant percentage of these drives may suddenly go dead one day--independently of its age. If this happens, there is the probability that the disk in use at the time gets damaged The percentageof such accidents is so insignificant that--as far as I have heard-- does not even acknowledge it formally.
As an end user, however, I of course want to make sure my friends are well informed--even if of a possibility as remote as this. It is remote; but it can occur:
Some three years ago, I happened to be the unlucky recipient of this lottery prize, and wished then that I had had someone give me the tip I'm sharing here.
Checking on the health of your is a very simple and quick procedure. No hassle at all--it's just a matter of developing the habit. There are a number of small and free programs or scripts that do the checking for you. They can easily be found on the Web.
does provide a utiity for checking their drives. It comes by default with any purchase. But if you want to take my word, you're better of getting an extra one, yourself. Why not play it safe, when you can easily do it?! Any of those free programs or scripts that you can find on the net will do. I've used several and the all worked to content.
If you know nothing about this and have one of Iomega's large capacity drives--or are about to get one--you're welcome to drop me a note, if you feel you need further help on this matter. I'll be happy to be of assistance.
Alternatively (or additionally), you can search the web using the words click of death. (This reference--I know from experience--comes from the fact that when a Zip Drive goes dead, we hear a single click)
This being said, please do not panic when you hear your Zip Drive clicking! For it usually clicks here and there, while it is searching for data.
In addition, please do not be afraid of using a either! These are great drives, besides being super convenient, for their storage capacity and portability. It is rare that a Zip Drive dies--I've read enough about this topic, as a result of the experience I've just shared above.
