Serbian defender Dušan Petkovic', the son of manager Ilija Petkovic'
(related remarks right below), was called to replace Montenegrin forward
Mirko Vucinic', who was injured on May 23, in a match against Germany,
for the 2006 European under-21 championship, in Portugal.
This leaves the Serbia and Montenegro Squad with a single Montenegrin
player, goalkeeper Dragoslav Jevric'.
(Remarks and further notes related to the May referendum are available in this eBook)

1 Finding it difficult to cope with the level of home media & other pressure that rose
on his father & on himself, along his first two weeks with the Team,
Dušan Petkovic' reportedly walked out from the Serbia and Montenegro's squad,
and did not travel to Germany.
Request was then sent to FIFA, seeking permission to replace Dušan Petkovic'
for the above reasons; but it was denied (possibly because it was not a case of injury).
So, unless peace could be found & the player somehow be rejoined with his squad-members,
Serbia and Montenegro looks set to be the only 2006 World Cup squad counting
on just 22 men, the team's jersey # 16 remaining vacant.
Curiously, their Western neighbor on the Adriatic sea, Croatia, has had a similar situation,
though apparently with none of the above-mentioned disturbing effects that have assailed
the Serbians and Montenegrins: the Croatian manager's son was
likewise named for his country's squad (see the Croatian Squad's Page).

Despite so many problems, the squad manager Ilija Petkovic' has remarkably
managed to retain a sense of humor, as he reportedly commented that he is the
only coach ever to have managed two countries in the World Cup finals.

2 A second player in the squad is out of action for the remaining of the
World Cup, just after their first match: Nemanja Vidic', suffering a recurrent
knee injury. Vidic' will not have played any match in the World Cup, as he did not play
against the Netherlands–he was suspended, due to a red card in the last round of
the World Cup qualifying matches.

3 A third player in the squad has unfortunately also gone out of action for
a while: Mladen Krstajic broke his left arm in the team's final match as
Serbia and Montenegro, in which match they were defeated (3x2) by Côte d'Ivoire.
