First Round Facts & Numbers

Eleven of the thirty-two teams emerged from the First Round yet undefeated, among which, only four won all their matches, whereas four had only one win.

On the other hand, eleven teams had no win at all in their First Round matches, among which, three teams lost all their matches.

Five teams faced a defeat, and yet managed to make it through to the Round of Sixteen.

Korea Republic (Group G) was the only squad to total four points and yet, not to move on to the Round of Sixteen. Korea Republic's First Round campaign was, in fact, the very best among the 16 teams going home at the close of the preliminary phase of the World Cup: one win, one draw, and one defeat.

Australia (Group F), Mexico (Group C), and Korea Republic (Group G) had similar First Round campaigns (one win, one draw, and one defeat), except for their goal difference, respectively 0, +1, and -1. Whereas the first two qualified for the Round of Sixteen, the Asian team went home.

Five teams, among the sixteen that were out after the First Round, managed to have one victory, though four of them lost the other two matches–the exception being the Korea Republic, as above mentioned.

The only Group in which the first and second placed team had equal number of points was Group C; whereas
in groups Group D and Group F, first and second were five points apart (the largest points gap).

The largest number of goals (18 goals) were scored in Group A, Group C and Group H;
whereas in Group B, only 10 goals were scored, and in Group G 11.
