also took part in the 1998 and 2002 World Cups.

Distressing news that Cissé has now had a fracture on his other leg,
his first fracture (2004) having kept him off the pitch for many months. The Liverpool player fought
hard to be fit for the World Cup, only to suffer a new fracture on France's last warm up
match, against China. What a terrible blow!
One could easily see that the entire French squad was quite shocked at Cissé's
dramatic injury: Zidane simply skied a penalty kick, something one would not see
a player of his class do, under normal circumstances.
Update: Cissé underwent surgery the day following his fracture, and is
reported well. What is not good news is that it will likely be five months before
the French player can be allowed to practice with a ball.

Djibril Cissé (see above) was replaced by Sidney Govou.
